Kolomenskoe estate

For more than five centuries, the much loved Kolomenskoye was the princes and tsar’s country residence. Unfortunately, the original wooden palace of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich, built in 1667 – 1668 by carpenter foremen Semen Petrov and serf carpenter Ivan Mikhailov was an unrivaled piece of Russian architecture, but, has not survived. Considered by its Russian contemporaries to be the “Eight wonder of the world”, this beautiful palace comprising a large number of buildings connected throughout by passageways. The entire complex must had been very impressive with its towers, cupolas, roofs, etc. During the reign of Aleksey Mikhailovich (father of Peter the Great), the largest and most beautiful building was established. Alexei Mikhailovich was a great lover of hunting and liked Kolomenskoye very much.
You will actually see charming wooden structures and among which the wonderful house of Peter the Great, built in 1702 stands, and other buildings erected by many of the country’s Tsar. One of the most stunning churches and finest examples of Russian tent-roofed architecture in the country, is the 62-meters Church of Ascension built by Italian well-known architects and belongs to UNESCO World Heritage. It is a beautiful place for summer relaxation or, winter hiking along the snow-covered landscapes.
Another monument, namely, the Church of St.John the Baptist, built during the 16th century, can be seen on the hill on the Moscow river shore. An interesting fact is this church had become the prototype for St. Basil’s church on Red Square. There is an opinion that both churches were designed by the same architect.
